The Form of a Servant
Everyone has a few jobs they quietly think belong to someone else. This message, the first in a new series on serving, takes that list apart and asks what it looks like to take the form of a servant the way Jesus did.
It's built on Philippians 2:5–11 and four things Jesus did. First, he emptied himself of privilege, the sense that some things are beneath you. Second, he made a willing commitment, like the bond servant in Exodus 21 who chose to stay for life because his master was good. Third, he humbled himself, which means knowing who God is, knowing who you are, and depending on him for everything. Fourth, he was obedient. The Greek word means to hear under, like a student who sits under a teacher's authority ready to do what's asked. The message spends time in John 13, where Jesus washes his disciples' feet, including the feet of Judas, knowing what Judas was about to do. And it keeps coming back to one idea: God is after your heart more than your hands. You can give without loving, but you can't love without giving.
